Bengaluru-based biopharmaceutical company Biocon has inked a pact with Brazil-based Biomm SA to commercialize its diabetes treatment in the Latin American nation. As per the MoU, Biocon will focus on developing, manufacturing, and supplying Semaglutide (generic: Ozempic)—a drug used to improve glycemic control in adults with type-2 diabetes. Meanwhile, Biomm will be in charge of obtaining regulatory approval and launching the drug in the Brazilian market.
Why Biocon opted for Biomm for its latest strategic vision?
Biomm is Brazil’s first and only biotechnology-focused company that aims to provide high-quality healthcare to patients with chronic conditions and enhance access to advanced treatments. The firm has a dedicated production facility in Brazil’s Nova Lima to develop, manufacture, and commercialize complex biotech and biosimilar medicinal products.
While highlighting the partnership with Biomm, Siddharth Mittal—CEO and MD of Biocon—stated that this collaborative approach is crucial to broadening their horizons beyond the US and Europe, according to a recent statement. He also mentioned that Biocon’s upcoming growth plans are aligned with this partnership, which includes launching a range of intricate GLP-1 drug-device combination products.
Heraldo Marchezini, CEO of Biomm, emphasized Brazil as the fifth most affected nation globally in terms of diabetes prevalence, with 16.8 million adults between the ages of 20 and 79 living with diabetes. Therefore, the firm has been actively pursuing strategic partnerships to advance diabetic care and substantially improve the quality of life for those impacted by the disease.
