Using this new technique, cell-based meat can be produced in a greener, cleaner, safer and more cost-effective manner
Scientists at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have found a new way to grow cell-based meat by zapping animal cells with a magnet. This new technique simplifies the cell-based meat production process by reducing reliance on animal products.
The complex production process for cell-based meat increases costs, limits production scale, and undermines the commercial viability of cell-based meat.
Production of Cell-Based Meat with the help of Magnets
- The NUS method is used to isolate myogenic stem cells from skeletal muscle and bone marrow by using a pulsed magnetic field. This technique uses a delicately tuned magnetic field to isolate stem cells.
- A short exposure of 10 minutes to magnetic fields causes cells to release molecules with regenerative, metabolic, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting properties. Muscle cells need these substances, known as muscle “secretome” to grow, survive, and develop into tissues.
- A safe and easy way to harvest growth-inducing secretomes in the lab at a low cost. In this way, the myogenic stem cells serve as a sustainable and green bioreactor to produce the nutrient-rich secretomes for growing cell-based meat at scale for consumption.
Additionally, a patent has been filed for this novel technology, and the NUS team is currently seeking industry partners for its commercialization
