Impact Food, a vegan seafood firm based in California, just received $500,000 to aid in the development of a more sustainable food system, beginning with vegan bluefin tuna that is raw and suitable for sushi. The Impact Food team is focusing more on creating seafood with the ideal flavor, texture, and experience in the hopes of finding a way to protect the most endangered animal species in the ocean. The firm will introduce its sushi-grade vegan bluefin tuna to contribute to the development of a more sustainable food system. The team’s goal is to offer a sustainable solution using plants without sacrificing seafood’s flavor by integrating their expertise in food science, molecular biology, and business.
Tuna is the most consumed fish in the world and one of the most endangered types of animals, thus they have chosen to start with a vegan, whole-cut alternative. Impact Food aims to lessen the strain on our oceans, in particular the Pacific bluefin population, with their plant-based Impact Tuna. They have developed a proprietary system to recreate the unique fleshy texture of tuna. Impact Food intends to introduce its Impact Tuna in the mainstream market by the end of 2023 after showcasing it at a few chosen restaurants and food service partners in the US and Japan.
