The Lithuanian food technology company Divaks has acquired €3 million in early funding, to develop yellow mealworm ingredients for meat substitutes, sports nutrition, snacks, confections, and pet food. To improve the growing, breeding, and processing conditions for mealworms, the company intends to continue its R&D with academic institutions. Compared to raising livestock, this type of protein is more environmentally friendly, using less land and water and emitting fewer greenhouse gases.
