In October 2023, the Biden Administration issued an Executive Order (EO) on safe, secure, and trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure that the U.S. leads the way in efficiently managing the risks of AI. As a part of this comprehensive strategy to mitigate the risks associated with using AI, the EO directed the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) to launch an AI research pilot within 90 days.
Considering the timeline, NSF has recently launched the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot. For introducing the NAIRR pilot, NSF partnered with ten government agencies, including USPTO, and twenty-five leading private & nonprofit organizations, such as Google, HP, Meta, OpenAI, and Intel. The NAIRR Pilot aims to connect U.S. researchers and educators to computational, data, and training resources needed to advance AI research and research that employs AI.
The pilot is organized into four focus areas:
- NAIRR Open for enabling open AI research via the NAIRR Pilot Portal.
- NAIRR Secure for catalyzing AI research requiring privacy and security-preserving resources and assembling exemplary privacy-preserving resources.
- NAIRR Software for facilitating and investigating inter-operable use of AI software, platforms, tools, and services for NAIRR pilot resources.
- NAIRR Classroom for reaching new communities through education, training, user support, and outreach.
As part of the launch of the NAIRR Pilot, NSF has also collaborated with the Department of Energy (DOE) to create an early opportunity for the research community. The independent agency of the U.S. federal government is accepting the request for access to a set of advanced computing resources for projects related to the focus through the initial call open till March 1, 2024.
