CF Industries and NextEra Energy Resources have announced an MoU to develop a green hydrogen project at the CF Industries Oklahoma Verdigris Complex. The proposed project was involved in the funding application submitted to the Department of Energy of the U.S. by the HALO Hydrogen Hub. In the proposed project, an independent 450-MW renewable energy facility developed by NextEra Energy Resources would power a 100-megawatt electrolysis plant. The electrolyzers at the location would produce zero-carbon green hydrogen, and CF Industries would be the only off-taker of it.

The US agriculture industry is responsible for roughly 9.9% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. So, there is a high need to decarbonize the American economy and the agriculture industry. Green hydrogen would produce up to 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually. The company anticipates green ammonia production to support the transition of agriculture to low and zero-carbon fertilizers in America. This would help reduce up to 130,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually from the agriculture supply chain.
