Patents with Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho-He-He

It is widely acknowledged that patent is a serious business, not a laughing matter. However, it is difficult to believe that patents can lack one of the most vital factor of human existence viz humor, especially if they are associated with almost every single thing in this world.

In this article, we lay down some interesting innovations which are associated with smile or laughter.

1) Laughter for Diagnosing Disease (US Patent Application 20060116878): This invention uses the laughter for asthma diagnosis. It works by comparing the laughter of an asthma patient as a reference sample with the laughter sample of the patient to be diagnosed

 2) Say Cheese!! (US Patent 89,83,202): This application of laughter is very popular nowadays in digital cameras (aka smile detection). The digital lenses of cameras can detect the smile on a person’s face and can automatically capture the moment. The algorithm in digital cameras is designed to detect the parabolas between mouth corners and determine whether the mouth curves substantially upward to form a smile or curves substantially downward to form a frown.

3) Laughter for Biometric Signature (S Zafeiriou et al., ‎2011): Researchers in Imperial College of London have shown that dense facial deformations in spontaneous smile and laugh, which is different for every person, can be used as Biometric signatures to uniquely identify a person.

Laughter is contagious, even we laugh at the sound of laughter itself. That’s why the Tickle Me Elmo doll is such a success — it makes us laugh and smile.

These examples indicate that laughter is not associated with humor only, and with evolving technology laughter will find other industrial applications.
