APC Microbiome Ireland, a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Center, and Tate & Lyle PLC, a global leader in ingredient solutions for healthier foods and beverages, announce the publication of its jointly filed international patent application for a synbiotic fiber technology that has produced promising early results in metabolic health. The technology makes use of a novel probiotic called Lactobacillus mucosae in conjunction with soluble dietary fibers, which may have a good impact on several metabolic health conditions, such as gut health, weight management, liver health, and heart and blood vessel health.

A preliminary clinical study has demonstrated significant and encouraging cardiometabolic health benefits from this collaboratively created synbiotic ingredient, which combines a proprietary shared by University College of Cork (UCC), Teagasc Lactobacillus strain and Tate & Lyle’s PROMITOR® fiber. APC Principal Investigators Paul Ross, Catherine Stanton, and Noel Caplice are co-inventors on the patent as well as project leads. An ongoing research collaboration between Tate & Lyle and APC Microbiome Ireland has recently been broadened and extended to examine the metabolic pathways that may have an impact on the association between the microbiome and health. This joint patent application for this novel ingredient technology was the result of this research partnership.
