Shoppers Drug Mart Offers a Cosmetics Recycling Program in Partnership with TerraCycle®

Shoppers Drug Mart Inc. is taking significant steps toward its commitment to reducing plastic waste with the launch of the “Quo Beauty Cosmetics Free Recycling Program”. The Canadian retail pharmacy chain has collaborated with TerraCycle® to initiate the revolutionary program, enabling customers to donate US$1 to the Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health™ for each pound of empty Quo Beauty cosmetics components offered to recycle.

The global cosmetics industry produces around 120 billion packaging units yearly, a major chunk of which is unacceptable by local recycling services. The new program introduces a convenient solution for customers to recycle empty Quo Beauty cosmetics components and keep plastic packaging from going to landfills and incinerators.

The program has been operational, allowing customers to mail their eligible empty Quo Beauty cosmetics components by signing up on the program page and downloading a prepaid shipping label. Once collected, the cosmetic packaging is cleaned and sorted by material type and then recycled into raw formats that manufacturers use to make new products.

Items eligible for recycling under the Quo Beauty Cosmetics Free Recycling Program

  • Plastic & glass tubes, pots, sprays, jars, and pumps
  • Lipstick, lip gloss tubes, lip balm, and wands
  • Mascara tubes
  • Concealer tubes and sticks
  • Eyeliner pencils and components
  • Eyeshadow and bronzer components
  • Foundation packaging
