Evolution of Augmented Reality
AR provides information and entertainment that overlay on the physical world. The term “Augmented Reality” has been attributed to Thomas Caudell , a former Boeing researcher, who is believed to have coined the term in 1990. However, AR has been in the works since 1900s. The first AR prototypes (Fig. 1), created by computer graphics pioneer Ivan Sutherland and his students at Harvard University and the University of Utah, appeared in the 1960s and used a see-through to present 3D graphics . The system was suspended from the ceiling. The computer generated graphic the users saw were simple wire frame drawings. Ever since that AR developed into a refined technology and with a progressive impact throughout the 20th century.
